Child Birth Injury & Perineal Health
For many women the special experience that comes along with being a mother is a wonderful source of joy. Unfortunately, a few patients suffer complications during child birth that may lead to long term problems.
An anal sphincter (AS) injury is a uncommon complication of vaginal birth. Majority of women with AS if recognised and well repaired have no long-term problems. Injuries to the pelvic floor in a traumatic delivery can lead to dysfunctions that can manifest much later in the woman’s life (such as pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence of urine). Many women complain of mal-alignment, granulation tissue, scarring, narrowing (or widening) of the vagina or pain after repair of vaginal tears sustained during delivery. These might result in sexual problems and self-image issue for some women and need to be addressed.
Mothers might not freely talk about their injury because of the embarrassment and associated stigma. Child birth injuries can result in profound psychological impact on the patient resulting in anxiety and depression. Affected women need treatment and follow up for their condition as well as advice on future options for delivery.
